Christmas Island guided adventure
Christmas Island Guided Adventure
$100.00 – $9,600.00
Since Fiji Airways reinstated flights to Kiritimati, Christmas Island, or CXI as it is referred to in short, the best Bonefishing destination on the planet is well within our reach again.
Everyone talks about Bonefish runs, and we’ve all read the magazine articles, but until you experience it, well you’re simply doing yourself an injustice! You will see and cast at between 100 and 150 bones a day… every day, in some of the most untouched, and isolated environments imaginable. We stay at Ikari House, in the best accommodation on the Island, right on the water, literally 2 minutes walk from the boats… and the food, I can’t even put into words how good it is… as long as you enjoy Crays and the freshest seafood imaginable that is!
You will have 7 fully guided fishing days, mainly targeting Bonefish on the flats and ocean reefs, but it can also include some specific GT time, even tuna, wahoo or sailfish can be on the agenda, the itinerary is up to you guys.
“I am a ‘trouty’ to the core, but I think I especially love bonefishing because it is so similar to trout fishing. You just don’t catch bonefish by accident, presentation is everything. You target single fish in crystal clear water, so you get to watch everything unfold in front of your eyes. Even tiny bones go 50 metres into the backing… and then there are the 7 and 8lbers, ‘awesome’ is not even in context! As a fly fisher, there are maybe 6 or 7 destinations that you must go to before it’s too late, and Christmas Island is one of those”

I did this trip last September with a friend from Adelaide. We had a fabulous week, together with two other Aussie fly fishers that we met at the airport during immigration ceremonies. We also met the two nicest Americans you could ever run across at the fishing lodge, so dinner times were very sociable affairs, with conversation mainly about bonefish, funnily enough! Ikari Lodge is right on the beach, with decent accommodations and excellent food – there was literally more crayfish than we could eat, and some of us are very good crayfish eaters. Our guides picked us up at the waterside in front of the lodge every day. We spent countless hours wading endless flats and saw almost unbelievable numbers of bonefish. We caught lots, of course, and lost plenty. We had lots of other species, too, topped by a Melbourne angler’s lovely 10 kilo GT. I don’t think we’ll ever wipe the smile off his face! The guides are excellent and they have the most amazing fish-spotting eyes. Christmas Island had been on my ‘must do’ list for years and all of my expectations were met – and then some! Go there while you can still wade 4 to six kilometres a day in warm gin-clear water, and cast across, through or into a stiffish easterly breeze. Maybe I’ll just have to go back for another dose of bonefish therapy one of these days. Remember to take everything you might need, lots of flies, spare outfits, wading stick and line tray, and a few bottles of your favourite tipple.

Went in April 2016. Got there first day was windy and rainy and thought “Oh no” here we go. But went out that afternoon and got 16 bones in one session, that’s when it hit me Wow what a place. The following days just got better and better. I took on getting a good Trigger as a mission in succeeded in getting a 10lbder Whoo hoo. Ikari Lodge offers good accommodation and even better food. The guides are excellent, friendly and I loved their sense of humour. The best part though was the company, the camaraderie and the sheer pleasure in being there. The trip was sensationally organised and CXI is a beautiful place. It is a must go there. I will be coming back.

I have been to every lodge in Christmas Island over the years and Ikari is streets ahead of everything. Good boats, guides and clean accommodation, with bonefish everywhere, how can you not love it.
